Meg won’t play ball

Ah, it’s great to see television that doesn’t go the way it’s meant to. Parkinson last Saturday night was one such moment. Meg Ryan was on the receiving end of some fairly aggressive (well, for Parky) questions.

Whatever was going on, it’s reassuring to see such a good interviewer as Parky lose the plot–yes, WEE are all human in TV land.

There has been a bit of press generated, with Parky trying to defend his performance and blame it all on Meg. Meg of course has retaliated saying that Parky is rude.

What actually happened is that the whole show was pretty boring and ordinary. First up was some rags to riches Irish bloke who is now on East Enders telling jokes and dragging out the normal cliches about his mother and father that you get with these types. Nothing amazing here, Parky didn’t even have to drag it out of this guy with some cleverly disguised question. This bloke was just gushing about his early life of poverty.

Then there were some loser fashion types, who I didn’t really listen to. And in between all of this some dorky kid who’d done something in New York or on Broadway or something was singing some pretty ordinary croony type songs.

And then came poor old Meg Ryan. There was no energy on the set. And most of us had lost interest in the show. Parky didn’t like the film and wanted to have a bit of a fight about it. Ryan doesn’t like interviews at the best of times. Bad mixture.

Unfortunately, it all smacked of an old bloke who felt his sensibility had been affronted by a film, and as he also happened to be interviewing one of the actors on the film he felt he was in a position to take advantage of it and at the same time, WEE suppose, he thought it might be a good way to liven up his show. Bad idea.

But really, no harm done. Not a great episode of Parky. Him and the producers have useful reminder not to be complacent, and let’s face it, everyone has their bad days. It’s just not that many of us have ours broadcast across the world.
